Embrace the roar of the tiger in the West

Kiss the Tiger arrives in Duluth on Thursday.

When Minneapolis band Kiss the Tiger debuted in 2016, singer Meghan Kreidler was best known as an actress – with stage credits at the Guthrie Theatre, Theater Mu and Theater Latte Da, among others. The group quickly built up a following for their muscular pop rock and unforgettable gigs. When theaters reopened last year, Kiss the Tiger was about to roll out, so to speak, roaring out the door. Now they’re one of Minnesota’s hottest indie bands, and they’re bounding onto the stage at the West Theater on Thursday night. Discover their latest album, “Vicious Kid”, and go to

Warroad finds Northborn

Warroad may be a bit remote for a day trip from Duluth, but if you want to make it a weekend, the Roseau County town gives you a reason. Last year, Warroad Community Partners launched a Northborn Days event to celebrate Allison Park: a sprawling community space named after Allison Marvin, a beloved young woman who was born in Warroad in 1969 and died of respiratory illness at the 23 years old. The park was built to celebrate “the spirit of all children in the North Country”, according to festival organizers, and as a result Northborn Days is a very family-friendly event – including a cow-themed birthday party -boys; water sports; a talent contest; a screening of “Sing 2”; and cornhole tournaments with adult and teen parentheses. The second annual event kicks off on Friday, with Good Morning Bedlam and three other artists performing at a music festival on Saturday. For information, see

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Lyric Opera of the North returns to full-scale in-person performances with a lavish production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s 1893 opera “Hansel and Gretel.” Sarah Lawrence, the company’s general art director, said the English-language production “has flavors of the 47th parallel around the globe.” This includes visual and narrative references not only to our own Northland, but also to northern kingdoms in Europe and Asia. “Hansel and Gretel” introduced generations of young audiences to opera, and this production is “rated just a wee bit scary”. Performances are held at the Marshall Performing Arts Center at the University of Minnesota Duluth on Fridays and Sundays; for tickets and information, see
