In the spring of 2020, the Georgia/South Carolina region of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) held a “Trash Bag Challenge,” asking artists to use scraps and scraps generated over the years by a quilter /art donor. The seven original stash trash bags included large and small scraps, fabric paint/dye rags, trims, cut-outs from various projects and a wide range of fabric types, cottons and fabrics. stretch metallic Lycra® upholstery. Each participant received a box containing approximately four books of random selections from the seven garbage bags.

The rules were simple: Use as many scraps as possible to create a pleasing composition, 12 to 36 inches on the longest side. Up to 3 additional fabrics can be added if needed. Artist’s choice of theme and style.

The resulting artwork was shared in a ZOOM meeting under the amazed gaze of the scrap donor/artist. Some artists have made several pieces.

This exhibition proudly presents a selection of the results, proving that one artist’s waste truly becomes another’s ART.
