New photos from SEEMONSTER show site-specific art installation at Tropicana

New images have been released to show what the massive art installation SEEMONSTER will look like when in situ at Weston-super-Mare Tropicana. Work began last month on site to prepare the monster – created from a disused oil rig in the North Sea – which will arrive in the seaside town in June.

It has been revealed that the 35-meter-tall structure will be covered in 6,000 scales to make it look like a sea creature. A SEEMONSTER spokesperson said: “After five design phases, our engineering teams have perfected the final model.

“Six thousand aluminum scales each with two bolts, which are arranged with washers to allow free movement with the wind. Each scale is exactly 14 mm from the next, creating an optimal aesthetic effect while leaving room for freedom of movement.

The team also worked with disability rights activist and author Dr Amit Patel to ensure the art installation is accessible to everyone. Since losing his sight in 2013, he has worked to help places, events and organizations across the UK become accessible to people of all abilities.⁠ ⁠

⁠The spokesperson added; “As SEE MONSTER’s Accessibility Consultant, Amit will help us ensure that SEE MONSTER is designed with accessibility at its heart, from handrails and ramped floors, to ensuring that our mesh floors are suitable for dogs- guides.” The SEEMONSTER is the first time in the world that an old oil platform has been transformed into a work of art.

The structure will feature gardens and an amphitheater at the top where sailing forecasts will be broadcast and there will also be two seaside telescopes for people to use. The art installation, which is expected to attract more than 200,000 visitors a year, will be the largest outdoor artwork ever seen in the city.

He will use his unique beachfront location harnessing the power of the elements to supply renewable energy to the structure. Energy will be stored overnight in batteries on the structure and used to power it during the day.

The structure will be brought into the city by road.
