Yet there was a strength of spirit inside of you that shone through. We see it especially in your art, and that’s what we recognize today. As we bravely continue to navigate through this pandemic and look forward to recovery, we believe the art could begin to change and progress.”

The 54th NSAC concluded with an awards ceremony held on December 10, 2021, with 1,800 entries submitted nationwide, surpassing last year’s 1,500 entries and illustrating the theme of the reSTART contest. Artists from across the Philippines were asked how their art can lead the charge to rebuild the nation to be bigger, stronger and more united. They were then tasked with creating forward-thinking and inspirational pieces that invigorate the resilience, hope and courage of the Filipino people, which were the recurring messages that shone from the top three winners in all four categories.

The first virtual gallery was launched at the 53rd NSAC in December 2020, in response to the closure of major galleries and museums by the Covid-19 pandemic. Previously, after each year’s NSAC award ceremonies, the winning pieces were featured in various exhibitions at public venues such as Robinsons Galleria, Virra Mall, Shangri-La Plaza, Ayala Museum and Glorietta. The virtual gallery made it easier for winners to promote their works, for patrons to access them, and for the general public to view the art from the comfort of their own homes.

As the country looks to a brighter future beyond the Covid-19 pandemic, art has become a stronger outlet for many people to communicate and inspire each other. As a result, the continued support of young talent, dedicated to putting out exceptional and moving art, is even more essential today. Pilipinas Shell’s NSAC remains committed to nurturing the next generation of artists, empowering them to take on their greatest role in nation building.
