Prudence Haines Obituary – Obituary and Service Information

Prudence Procter Haines, 66, died peacefully at her Wallingford home on October 27, 2021, after battling ovarian cancer for two and a half years.

Pru has devoted his career to the history and cultural institutions of the greater Philadelphia area. She has served as Executive Director of Japanese House and Garden, Historic Yellow Springs, Hope Lodge, and Mather Mill. In addition, she has developed educational programs for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Hagley Museum and Library, and the Philadelphia History Museum. She has held curatorial positions for institutions in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Pru was a leader in her profession, active with the Association of Living Historical Farms and Museums, the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums, the Tri-State Coalition for Historic Places, and the Philadelphia Museum Council. She was loved by her colleagues, held high professional standards and mentored new colleagues to successful careers.

The gathering of the Friends of Providence in the media was Pru’s long-standing spiritual home. Most recently, she participated in the climate action project and as co-clerk of the meeting. Pru has also served on the boards of the Delaware Valley Friends School, the Rose Valley School, and the Arch Street Meeting House Preservation Trust.

Pru loved art, music, food and travel, but she was happier with her family and nature in the great outdoors, and of course, inviting people around her table with all the makings for the conversation and cheerfulness lasted until late into the night. She was a passionate gardener and skilled in arranging flowers. She has traveled across the country and around the world to hike, backpack, canoe, and identify wildflowers and birds.

Pru will be remembered for her strength, independence, staunch defense of her children, welcoming kindness, compassion, humor and deliciously whimsical wit. Pru is survived by her husband Bruce, her children Jennifer and Samuel Haines, her mother, Winifred West, her sisters Ellen Wilson, Margaret Procter, Katharine Procter, as well as several nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate Pru’s life will be scheduled.

Please make commemorative contributions to Providence Friends Meeting in Media PA or Delaware Valley Friends School in Paoli, PA.
