Suman Gupta is an Indian magic realist with a modernist vision. His paintings fit well in the tradition of Indian realism as defined by great masters like Bikash Bhattacharya, Ganesh Pyne, Raja Ravi Verma etc.
Suman chooses his subjects from his immediate surroundings in Jammu – his land and its people – and describes the beauty he finds in everyday life.
His paintings celebrate the underlying epic nature of the mundane and common man with his own extraordinary expression in magical realism. He pushes the boundaries of the realist tradition with his multi-layered imagery.
Life, beauty, death, memory and confrontation coexist in her universe. Family and friends are the cast of characters that appear in his dreamlike narrative works.
