UP’s diversity and local artwork on display in PM Modi’s gifts to G7 summit dignitaries
Among the many items offered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to dignitaries during his visit to the G7 summit in Germany were One District One Product (ODOP) handmade goods made in Uttar Pradesh.
The idea of choice was diversity, to give a platform to the talent of India’s local artisans and showcase Indian culture, government officials said.
The One District, One Product program is the flagship initiative of the Uttar Pradesh government led by Yogi Adityanath, which aims to encourage indigenous and specialized products and crafts.
There are products in UP that cannot be found anywhere else, such as the ancient and nutritious ‘kala namak’ rice, the rare and intriguing handicraft of the wheat stalk, the renowned chikankari and zari-zardozi world on clothing.
These include the intricate and stunning horn and bone work that uses the remains of dead rather than living animals, a nature-friendly substitute for ivory.
Navneet Sehgal, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, MSME, Government of Uttar Pradesh told News18: “It is a great pride for us that our honorable Prime Minister has gifted esteemed dignitaries with the handcrafted products by our artisans who are part of the ODOP program. This will provide great encouragement to all of our artisans.
The ODOP is now being replicated across the country by the central government, officials added.
